| October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month—a time to recognize the impact domestic violence has on individuals, families, and communities, and to remind those experiencing abuse that they are not alone. As EMS professionals, we are often called upon during some of the most difficult and vulnerable moments in a person’s life. We may be the first to see injuries, recognize warning signs, or have an opportunity to speak privately with someone who may be experiencing abuse. Our responsibility extends beyond treating physical injuries. We have an opportunity to listen without judgment, provide compassionate and respectful care, protect a patient’s dignity, and connect survivors with resources that can help them move toward safety. Domestic violence does not discriminate. It can affect people of every age, background, gender, and socioeconomic status. Abuse may be physical, emotional, sexual, psychological, or financial. Sometimes the signs are obvious; other times they are not. A simple question, a compassionate conversation, and knowing where to turn for help can make a meaningful difference. As an EMS organization, we stand with survivors. We encourage our providers to remain alert to the signs of domestic violence, approach every patient with compassion, and understand that our words and actions can help create a pathway to safety.
